Golden Spike

We spent 2 nights in Ogden UT so we could go to Golden Spike National Historic Site. We enjoyed our visit and took the east loop drive which is on about 7 miles of the old roadbed of the railroad.
While we were there they moved the replica engine on the section of track that they have. We found out that the reason that the site is not at Promontory Point is because that is not where the two lines met. It was a news paper reporter that picked the closest point he could find on a map when he was writing his report. So all you learned in school about where the railroad met is incorrect.

Why were the railroad ties from the Central Pacific squared off and the ties from the Union Pacific rounded on the edge? Oh and how many stars were on the flag flown at the last spike ceremony? Why did the flag have that number of stars?

After our visit we had a late lunch in Brigham City at a neat 50's drive in which also had inside seating. Although there were Coke signs all over their fountain drinks were Pepsi.

Following lunch we went to Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, The museum area is very well done with lots to see and do. We took the drive around the refuge but didn't see a lot since it was the wrong time of day and perhaps year. Following are some pictures.
